Kasturi Banerjee, Ph.D., studied Life Sciences at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Mohali, India. Her undergraduate research included several internships in diverse research labs in India funded by summer research internships. Her Masters thesis project "The effect of the pathogenesis of Vibrio cholerae on leukocyte recruitment " investigated the role of V. cholerae porin proteins on the recruitment of neutrophils at the infected sites. She received her Dual BS-MS degree that was fully funded by KVPY national fellowship in Life Sciences in 2013 from IISER Mohali, India.
She pursued her Ph.D. studies in pancreatic cancer immunotherapy in the group of Dr. Maneesh Jain at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, Omaha, Nebraska. In UNMC, she characterized a novel mucin cancer vaccine against pancreatic cancer in both in-vitro using multi-panel flow cytometry, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, and cell culture techniques; and in ex-vivo pancreatic cancer mice model. The 4th and 5th year of her doctoral research was funded by the Program of Excellence Award from Graduate Studies, UNMC. She successfully defended her thesis titled "MUC4 based immunotherapy for Pancreatic Cancer " in 2018.
She worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Stony Brook University, New York under the guidance of Dr. Bettina Fries from July 2018 - April 2022. During her Postdoc training, her research focused on "developing vaccine and therapeutic antibodies against multi-drug resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae". Using immunological assays like ELISA, phagocytosis and hybridoma technology, and infectious diseases mice model, she explored potential vaccine candidates for MDR K. pneumoniae therapy. She received several local, regional, and national trainee awards to support her postdoc research and present at multiple conferences. Furthermore, her postdoc work where she developed a monoclonal antibody 24D11 along with her co-worker Dr. Michael P. Motely was recently filed for a patent by V.A. Northport.
Kasturi joined KCAS Bioanalytical and Biomarker Services located at Olathe, Kansas as Scientist-II (Designated as PI) in the Cell and Gene Therapy department in 2022. In that role, she worked closely with clients on Flow Cytometry assays that encompass R&D, method development, method validation, test procedure preparation, sample analysis, data calculation, interpretation & review, troubleshooting, report preparation, and providing deliverables to support their clinical trials in compliance with FDA. During her employment, she received recognition from her clients and was featured on the company's website in the "Bravo KCAS" section.
Currently, she is working as Senior Clinical Scientist in the Immunology Department at the CSL Behring where she is involved in running clinical trials in the rare diseases field.
Dr. Banerjee is an avid science advocate and actively participates in social dialogues regarding the scientific community and research. She has been invited as a guest speaker on various podcasts, published interviews, and webinars.
